According to an article recently published in The Telegraph, doctors have warned that fashionable wooden lavatory seats combined with use of harsh cleaning products are the likely culprits in a resurgence of bottom rash among children.After investigation in detail of five cases, doctors have concluded that either wooden toilet seats or harsh cleaners were responsible for causing skin irritation in children similar to nappy rash in babies. These findings were published in the medical journal Paediatrics and have highlighted the need for others in the profession to be alerted. The Director of paediatric dermatology at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Centre in Baltimore stated, "lavatory seat dermatitis is one of those legendary conditions described in medical textbooks and seen in underdeveloped countries, but one that younger paediatricians have not come across in their daily practice." This troubling condition can occur after several uses of a wooden lavatory seat of repeated exposure to the residue left by harsh cleaning materials. In the majority of cases, the irritation is easily treated, but if the cause is not tackled the problem will recur and may spread, leading to bacterial infection. Prevention is better than cure when it comes to lavatory seat dermatitis and experts recommend using paper seat covers in public conveniences, replacing wooden toilet seats with plastic ones or cleaning toilet seats and bowls on a daily basis avoiding the use of harsh cleaners which may contain skin irritants.
