Bathrooms sell houses

Good quality, well-finished bathrooms can help to sell your home

Everyone knows that it’s going to be harder to sell houses for the foreseeable future. For many, this means that they’ll wait for a while before deciding to move on, or spend money on refurbishment and extensions rather than buying somewhere new. Not everyone has that choice though. Many have to move – either because their houses are too small, or too big – or because they have to move areas to take up new jobs. If you have to sell in a difficult market, you need to do everything you can to make your house saleable – and one of the best areas to concentrate on is the bathroom.

Getting your bathrooms right

Bathrooms and kitchens are often the first things to be ripped out and replaced by new home owners, but if you update your bathroom in the right way, you’ll attract buyers who will see that they could live with the bathrooms without having to do any more work. Nice, clean, contemporary bathrooms could make a real difference to how successful you are when you sell your home:
  • White bathroom suite – most people prefer white bathroom suites and there is such a range of styles today that it’s easy to get a good bathroom suite without spending a fortune. Choosing white means that you can use any other colours in the bathroom, creating a clean, bright space.
  • Storage – storage is important in your bathroom, especially if the room itself isn’t too big. Bathrooms tend to be in the smallest rooms in the house and if you’ve added an en-suite to your bedroom, that’s likely to be a small room too. Use under-sink storage, or good-sized bathroom cabinets to make the most of the space you’ve got.
  • Tiling – tiling is easy to clean and looks very contemporary. Many people fully-tile their bathrooms, reducing the need for frequent re-decoration and giving a real sense of space. You may want to tile the floor too, rather than using carpet.
  • Heating – if you can afford to, why not install underfloor heating? Bathrooms really benefit from this form of heating and it’s a real selling point too. Add wall-mounted heated towel rails for additional heating – making sure that it’s placed somewhere convenient for getting out of the bath or the shower – and you’re creating a bathroom that’s really inviting.
