Radiators - Lessons from a Cold Snap

Cold snaps occur across Europe during the winter months, and each time we reassess the importance of heating, radiators and energy consumption.

Could you make it through winter with no radiators? It's a daunting thought. We're used to being inundated with photos of pensioners struggling in the winter – with some having to make what can be life or death decisions on whether or not to turn their radiators up. The high cost of our heating bills seems to be climbing year-on-year. But as severe cold snaps show, our radiators are just as crucial to our lives and health as food and water.

Appreciating Radiators - Arctic Conditions

When there's a cold snap in the UK, it's important not to underestimate the risk to vulnerable people. Looking at parts of the world that don't have radiators or insulated homes shows how dangerous the freezing cold can be. In 2007 for example, Peru declared a state of emergency as in just a few weeks, 200 people, including 50 children died, mainly from pneumonia caused by the sub-zero temperatures. Of course, in the Andes, the people don't have access to modern radiators and are exposed to extreme temperatures – it is expected that hundreds will die routinely of the cold every year in Peru. Some scientists have claimed more parts of the world will experience such extremes thanks to climate change. When we're sat in our homes, in front of our radiators, it's easy to feel blasé about climate change. But even the UK can be vulnerable to a cold snap.

Chilled to the Bone

The first few months of 2009 showed how drastically cold weather can impact on Britain. The snow ground parts of the country to a halt for a day or two. For many, who can put their snow-drenched clothes on cosy radiators to dry, and have youth on their side, it was a thrilling time. But there are those who struggle to pay their electricity and gas bills - their radiators may not be turned on. Aside from the vulnerable – the very young and the very old – there are other people who struggle in cold temperatures. The BBC profiled Fiona Trotter who has Reynaud’s syndrome – meaning her fingers and toes are temporarily starved of blood when exposed to the cold. Keeping the radiators turned up is crucial, as is avoiding going outdoors – Fiona said just walking from her car to the office was agony. The condition affects up to 10 million people in the UK alone.
