There’s nothing more annoying than clogged-up showers. If your shower drain gets blocked, use these easy tips to get the water flowing again.

If your shower’s tray keeps filling up with water when you’re washing, then chances are the drain has become blocked. Not only does this cause an eyesore and become incredibly smelly, but if the block gets bad, it could cause structural damage. Prevention is better than cure, and there are some tips below to help you keep blocked showers at bay. But if it does clog up, you may need to take more drastic action.

Preventing Blocked Showers

To stay on top of any blocks in the shower get into the habit of pouring boiling water or a specialist cleaning product down the drain once or twice a year. Showers that receive this treatment are far less likely to get clogged up, and will save you time and effort in the long run. To prevent hair from getting down the drain and blocking up your shower, buy a stopper for the plug hole which will gather hair while allowing the water to run through. Switch your normal bar of soap for liquid soap, which will eliminate a build up of soap scum.

Quick Fixes for Blocked Showers

The first thing to do if your shower gets blocked is to pour plenty of boiling water down the drain. Light blockages of soap scum and small amounts of hair should be dislodged by this. If not, try using a plunger to dislodge the gunk. If you still have no success, your shower’s drain is most likely clogged up with a large amount of hair. There are two ways to deal with this. If you don’t like getting your hands messy, then you could try pouring something down the drain to dissolve the hair. Some people suggest a squirt of hair removal cream, left for a few hours before being rinsed through with boiling water. Others opt for pouring caustic soda or bicarbonate of soda down the shower drain, leaving for several minutes, then adding boiling water. But if you think you can handle it, the most effective way to clear hair blockages from showers is to create a hook at the end of a long piece of wire, and pull the hair out of the drain. It will look disgusting but your shower will be instantly cleared.
