A new survey which aims to help builders' merchants to get better informed about current customer needs has been released.

According to manufacturers Shades, design consciousness is on the up among UK furniture buyers.

Quality of construction topped the poll, which asked customers about what they looked for in the fitted furniture that they bought. Colour scheme and design also ranked highly, with price in fourth place.

The survey was also aimed to help future product development for the company.

Julie Holliday, Brand Manager at Shades, said: "The interesting point of these findings is that, customers are now more design conscious and quality aware than ever before.

"This is great news for furniture sales as it means that customers are likely to be tempted by higher-end products, with good looks and durable construction a priority over price."

The survey interviewed 278 people across the UK who were shopping for bathroom products.

Polling venues ranged from merchants to boutiques, in order to get the widest possible cross-section of views. Age, gender and social status were also taken into consideration.
