Bathrooms - Spas ''influencing bathroom design''

Luxury spas are the inspiration behind the latest trends in bathroom design, according to an expert.

Jackie Daly, editor of Kitchens, Bedrooms and Bathrooms magazine, said that showers and baths that promote wellness and complementary therapies had crossed over from expensive hotel facilities to the mainstream.

She told the Observer: "The sensual side of bathing is being explored with the introduction of plunge pools, infinity baths … and drenching shower systems delivering water that cascades from flush ceiling panels like natural rainfall."

Ms Daly added that the influence of the kind of design usually associated only with top hotels could also be seen in the latest high-end bathroom furniture, shower trays and mirrors.

The interior design advice may be of some interest to the Duchess of York after the fire service was called out to deal with a blaze in the bathroom at her Surrey home.

Press reports suggest the fire was started by a scented candle and that it caused £20,000 worth of damage.
