Boilers - Check fitters'' qualifications, HSE urges
09/11/2007
Homeowners have been urged to check that gas fitters are legally accredited before allowing them to carry out work on domestic appliances such as
boilers.
The warning from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) comes after a Wrexham-based fitter was found in court to have missed a gas leak while he was fixing a separate fault - leaving the occupiers of the home at risk of an explosion or a fire.
In particular the HSE advises that before commissioning any work, homeowners should first check if the tradesman is Corgi-registered.
HSE inspector Barbara Francis said: "In this case, the risk was fire or explosion but improperly maintained appliances can also give rise to carbon monoxide (CO) which is potentially lethal.
"You cannot see, smell or taste CO fumes, leaving anyone exposed feeling unwell. In the worst situations, CO can kill without warning in just hours."
Heat and Plumb specialises in the latest heating solutions, including boilers from Vokera and Trianco, and provides advice and assistance to homeowners opting to fit appliances themselves through a dedicated customer service telephone line.
