Oil Tanks - Tank security measures recommended
29/01/2008
Users of home heating oil have been advised to step up their security measures in the wake of a spate of thefts.
Norfolk police have recorded 36 heating oil thefts in recent weeks and are keen for homeowners to take measures to deter the criminals, reports the Lynn News.
Officers believe the correct positioning of oil tanks can reduce the risk of falling victim to such a crime.
They advise either moving it to somewhere difficult to access, as thieves need to get close to an oil tank to drain it, or to a spot that is easily visible from the house itself.
Homeowners who want to go a step further could also site their oil tank in a lockable steel container, providing they ensure there is sufficient ventilation inside, officers added.
The thefts are believed to have been prompted by the current high price of the fuel. Figures compiled by BoilerJuice.com show the average cost of home heating oil is 45 per cent higher than 12 months ago.
