Plumbing - First-ever gallery cum public toilet unveiled
A £52,000 public toilet cum art gallery is being opened in Soho in central London.

Dubbed "toilet-pod", the installation was conceived by noted architect Stephen Johnson in conjunction with local residents.

The first artist to have their work displayed on the toilet walls will be photographer Elaine Duigena, with exhibits scheduled to change on a rotating basis to make room for works from amateur artists from the surrounding area.

Visitors to Soho will have to ask designated keyholders to gain access to the toilet cubicle, but are free to enter the main door to see the artwork.

The new toilet is an attempt to address the problem of a lack of local facilities for disabled people and children.

Councillor Alan Bradley, cabinet member for street environment, told 24dash.com: "The toilet is a wonderful idea and it is been a pleasure to work with the local community in delivering such a central feature to the area. Not only is the toilet functional but it’s also a piece of art."
