Plumbing - Low-flush toilets given away in eco-scheme

A forward-thinking local government in the US has given away 350 low-flush toilets in a bid to cut water wastage.

Residents of Savannah in Georgia were given 350 of the ultra low-flush models for free - and there was no shortage of takers.

Brenda Smith, who waited in a quarter of a mile-long queue to pick up her toilet, told Savannahnow.com: "It's free. And it helps the environment."

Ms Smith's sentiments were echoed by Reverend Marion Brooks who also confessed that his priorities were first and foremost "to keep the water bill down" and that saving the environment was a secondary consideration.

The scheme is the third giveaway undertaken in the state of Georgia, but the first such that was open to all the state's inhabitants rather than just those in low-income neighbourhoods.

The decision to target dilapidated areas was taken since they have old toilets, many of which use as much as ten gallons per flush.
