Renewable Energy - City asked to become more green
17/04/2008
Winchester home owners have been urged to cut down on carbon emissions after it was revealed that their city has been the first UK city to go into carbon debt.
Enviromental campaigners have called for people to make their homes more environmentally friendly through measures such as efficient
boilers and solar water heating.
Robert Hutchison, of Winchester Action on Climate Change, told the Hampshire Chronicle: "I think we would say that it's all the more urgent that people and organisations really do start taking seriously the issue of climate change."
The city has a carbon debt after contributing one year's worth of greenhouse gases in just 101 days, the paper reports.
Winchester Action on Climate Change also noted eco-friendly measures on top of green boilers and
renewable energy, including buying food from local sources.
The government has recognised that boilers can have a significant impact on a home's carbon emissions, with more than half a building's CO2 emissions coming from heating.
