Renewable Energy - New eco-friendly housing opens
30/04/2008
A new centre which produces cutting-edge, green energy has been opened for homes on the premises, it has been reported.
The Biomass Energy Centre at Kirkdale Manor was officially opened by Ryedale MP John Greenway, according to the Malton and Pickering Mercury.
Low carbon heating and hot water will be supplied through renewable technologies to 25 properties at the refurbished manor in Nawton.
The nine apartments and 16 houses receive power from the centre's low carbon biomass boiler, while rainwater is stored in a £25,000 system to be used for toilet flushing and garden watering.
Fuel for the 250kW boiler at the Biomass Energy Centre will be supplied from local wood sources.
Richard McLane, of Kirkdale Developments, told the paper: "We've proved it is possible for developers of older properties to ensure they are eco-friendly."
Last week, energy firm E.ON and the University of Nottingham announced they are to create a replica 1930s house and use it to test the effectiveness of
renewable energy technology.
