Renewable Energy - Scout hut goes green

A Sussex scout group is set to do its bit in the fight against climate change with adopting green technology, it has been reported.

The 1st Heathfield scout troop is to build an environmentally-friendly scout hut, in a project that will use the latest renewable energy technology, according to the Sussex Express.

Included in the single-storey 282 square metre hut are sustainable straw bale walls, a water recycling system and an eco-friendly heat pump.

The building will house a main hall, a store room, two toilets, a kitchen and two side rides, with power contributed by large solar panels installed on the roof.

Applications for the development were approved by Wealden District Council, on the condition that trees in the area are protected, reports the newspaper.

Scouts have become increasingly active in environmental affairs, with members able to gain a global conservation badge, while the organisation planted its 500,000th tree earlier this month.
