Solar Heating - Developers ''going green''
18/02/2008
A growing number of house builders are starting to incorporate energy efficient heating systems and
renewable energy sources in their properties.
The Code for Sustainable Homes and the imminent introduction of mandatory energy performance certificates (EPCs) for new build properties has made developers think more carefully about energy efficiency, according to Karen Emerson of Gentoo Homes.
She told the Journal that EPCs are a real plus for homebuyers and that her company has responded to the legislative change by pledging to install more environmentally-friendly kit.
"Gentoo is already implementing a wide range of energy efficiency measures such as energy efficient
boilers, shower-flow restrictors and high levels of thermal insulation as part of our ongoing commitment to our green strategy," Ms Emerson explained.
Her comments came just days after Inspace revealed it plans to fit
solar heating systems in 360 of the new homes it is scheduled to build in 2008.
The social housing developer estimates that the roof integrated solar panel systems will meet around 50 per cent of each home's annual hot water requirement and cut £100 from each household's annual heating bill.
