Solar Heating - School fitted with solar panels to cut carbon footprint
10/01/2008
A primary school in Sussex has invested in solar electric system in a bid to cut its carbon emissions.
Under an agreement with alternative energy firm Southern Solar, Grovelands Primary School in Hailsham has recently been equipped with 54 solar panels on its roof which, will help to provide power for computers and lighting.
The system which is activated only when the sun is shining will also cut the school's operating costs, freeing up funding for other educational projects in the long-term.
Headteacher Marion Lace told the Eastbourne Herald: "This has been an excellent project to be involved in - it will save money on our electricity bill but, more importantly, it has been an opportunity to teach the children that everyone can do things to help sort out serious issues like climate change."
The school also runs a recycling scheme and is planning to plant an orchard of apple trees this spring to further improve its green credentials.
