22/01/2008
Huge solar panels are to be employed in a brand new development which promises to be world's first zero-carbon city.
Work on the city, which is to be called Madar, is due to begin next month in Abu Dhabi and, once complete, will house 50,000 people.
Its top eco status has been achieved in part thanks to the incorporation of a vast
solar heating system, which will harness the constant supply of sunshine that characterises the climate of the Gulf state.
Khaled Awad, director of the project's property development unit, told AFP that the aim of the city is to marry sustainability to an excellent quality of life.
He explained: "This is a place that has no carbon footprint and will not hurt the planet in any way. At the same time the city will offer the highest quality of life possible for its residents."
It is hoped that the city will help Abu Dhabi steal a march over Dubai as a location showcasing the best in modern architecture.
