A new kitchen or bathroom is the key to adding value to your home, it has been claimed.

According to figures from Nationwide a new kitchen or bathroom can add as much as five per cent to the value of your property.

This underscores how important it is to make sure they are well maintained and in-line with trends, according to Andrew Leech, technical consultant with the National Home Improvement Council.

He said: "The first thing to do is look at your bathroom and kitchen because, although you don't see them from the outside, you definitely have to have them in good order. You have to keep up to date with trends because things are always changing in the kitchen; moves from white goods to stainless steel for example."

He added: "You have to bring the bathroom up to speed too, especially if it is an old bathroom."
