Water Heaters - Energywatch calls for smart meter delivery plan
03/12/2007
Pressure on the government for more clarity in its plan to roll out smart energy meters in all homes has increased with the week, following the support from an energy industry watchdog.
Under current government plans the meters will be in all UK homes within ten years.
However, according to Allan Asher, chief executive of energywatch, the ten-year target will not be attainable without a clear and binding delivery framework.
He said "While energywatch is pleased to see that the Prime Minister is convinced of the merits of smart meters, they will not be in every home without a clear government directive for their installation within ten years.
"The government now needs to turn its expectation of smart meters into a reality."
Smart meters would bring an end to the practice of estimated bills by providing an accurate reading of customers' energy usage, and would also enable customers to scrutinise their energy use more effectively.
