Seek advice for doing DIY in bathroom

23/06/2008
Those planning to carry out major DIY work to their home's bathrooms and kitchens should seek professional help first, an insurance provider has claimed.

In comments which may interest those thinking of a large project such as building a wet room, Direct Line said problems caused through botched DIY activities could be classed as "accidental damage".

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance for the firm, added: "However, we recommend that professional advice is sought before undertaking any major DIY work, such as knocking down walls or fitting kitchens or bathrooms."

Research from Halifax Home Insurance suggested that more than seven million UK homeowners are living with an unfinished DIY project in their houses.

It also claimed individuals who cause damage by doing work they are not qualified for, such as flooding after installing a shower, may not be covered by the insurance policy.

Meanwhile, home insurance company Zurich claims 47 per cent of homeowners do not tell their policy provider about major DIY work they are carrying out, with 73 per cent not knowing if they are covered for the work they do.
