Boilers ''part of carbon reduction strategy''

24/06/2008

Homeowners can do a range of things to reduce their carbon footprint, including updating their boilers, an industry member has said.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Wake Up To Money programme, Alan Wood, the chief executive of Siemens, said people should consider methods across the spectrum for saving energy, from maximising their use of natural light to replacing out-of-date boilers.

"Condensing boilers naturally makes a big contribution as well, and particularly in factories and commercial buildings there are lots of things you can do to minimise the expenditure on heating during the winter and on cooling during the summer," he told the programme.

Mr Wood also pointed out that use of insulation can help back the savings made through efficient boilers and other methods and noted the financial incentive of lower fuel bills from taking such measures.

Low-energy lights bulbs were another way to reduce a home's energy consumption, he added.

Siemens is a UK-based electronics manufacturer and has recently undertaken research will examines ways London can become more sustainable.
