Pensioners in Liverpool are living in the coldest houses, it has been revealed.

According to a survey conducted by the Department of Health (DoH) 28.2 per cent of over-65s in Liverpool do not have central heating in their homes.

Also making the top five were Leeds (28.1 per cent), Barrow in Furness (26.5 per cent), Portsmouth (24.5 per cent) and Kingston upon Hull (24 per cent).

The findings were released by the DoH to highlight the potential health problems elderly people face in wintertime and to promote its new Keep Warm Keep Well campaign.

Elderly people, or those with parents who are pensioners, who are looking to make their homes warmer this winter can receive financial assistance through the Warm Front Scheme and Winter Fuel payments.

During 2005/06, some 11,625,453 winter fuel payments were made, with a home receiving a new heating system every 45 seconds on average.
