Oil Tanks - Oil tank thefts increase

Police are warning oil tank owners in south Wales to be alert after a spate of thefts, it has been reported.

Dyfed-Powys police told the Swansea Evening Post they have discovered an increase in thefts from oil tanks as the price for heating oil rises.

During 2007, there were 17 such crimes, compared to the 59 thefts from oil tanks in the first five month of this year.

Sergeant Mike Melly told the news provider: "It's a rural crime which I believe has escalated since the increase in the price of heating oil.

"The situation is constantly being reviewed, but has improved recently."

Denise Daniel, from Gorlas, also revealed that she had around £940 of fuel stolen from her oil tank two weeks ago.

Since then, she has followed police advice to install sensor lights around the unit.

In related news, the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard has also advised residents to secure their oil tanks after thefts.

Among the measures they recommend is locking the filler cap, using lighting in the area and building a fence around the tank.
