Heat Pumps - Ground source heat pumps recommended

20/09/2007
The ex-president of the environmental organisation Greenpeace has recommended ground source heat pumps as an eco friendly way to heat a home.

Dr Patrick Moore recently stated that such pumps could eventually help society wean itself away from its excessive use of fossil fuels.

His comments came at the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce in New York, reports Monroe News.

DTE Energy sponsored his visit, during which he also said that nuclear energy is a viable alternative to fossil fuels. This is a marked turn-around from his views in the 1970s during which he was anti-nuclear energy.

Ground source heat pumps do not require any external fuel and work by transferring heat form the ground into structures using a buried ground loop.

Dr Moore served as the president of Greenpeace for nine years and is a noted ecologist. He now works as a consultant on environmental issues.

He is also a supporter of genetically-engineered food.
