Renewable Energy - Leisure centre makes use of renewables04/06/2008 A new leisure centre in Hertfordshire features a range of renewable energy technologies, it has been reported. The Watford leisure centre will open on Saturday (June 7th) and houses a 25-metre swimming pool, 100 station gym fitness suite, a sports hall, three dance studios and four squash courts, along with other health and commercial facilities. Helping to powering all this will be a selection of renewable energy sources, such as roof-mounted solar water heating and ground-linked heat recovery systems. A ground source heat pump using boreholes around 100 metres deep will use the natural temperature of the earth to warm the leisure centre, provided in a further renewable energy supply. Garry Stewart from Studio E Architects, which worked on the project, told the news provider: "Both of the new state-of-the-art leisure facilities will have a dramatic impact on Watford. "Sustainability has been a key consideration in the design of the operationally innovative buildings, both of which have significant renewable energy features." Last week, it was announced the NHS would make greater use of renewable energy to reduce its carbon footprint. ![]() |
