Renewable Energy - Report calls for government support on renewables

04/06/2008

A new report has suggested that promoting renewable energy to homeowners could reduces the UK's carbon emissions by up to 30 million tonnes, it has been reported.

The Growth Potential for Microgeneration in England, Wales and Scotland document was complied for the Department fro Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and claims an increase in microgeneration could be caused if the government promotes the technology, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Up to nine million more renewable energy source could be installed by UK homeowners by 2020, the report says, if the government provides the necessary financial and legal support.

Also, the report estimates that up to 98,000 microgeneration unit were installed in the UK by the end of 2007, with the vast majority of these (90,000) thought to be solar water heating panels.

Welcoming the findings, Dave Sowden, chief executive of the Micropower Council, commented: " It clearly shows that with the right policies in place, the ability for citizens to save money, make a marked difference to tackling UK emissions and future-proof their homes in a world of uncertain and unprecedented energy price movements is substantial."
