Renewable energy for lifeboat station

27/06/2008

A new lifeboat station in Liverpool will make use of renewable energy, it has been reported.

The boathouse on Hoylake's North Parade is expected to deliver improved rescue response times by keeping the lifeboat and its launching tractor in the same building, according to the Liverpool Daily Post.

In addition to training offices, a mechanic's workshop and facilities for the crew, the new station will boast renewable energy technology to keep it warm.

Heating will be provided by a ground source heat pump, which will take warmth from the adjacent beach and use it to heat the buildings floor.

Because the heat recovery loops are buried in the beach's intertidal zone, they will gather warmth with each incoming tide.

Due to the use of renewable energy, the lifeboat station qualified for the government's Low Carbon Buildings Programme and awarded a grant to cover 35 per cent of the system's installation cost.

Earlier this month, hertfordshire.com reported the new Watford leisure centre will feature roof-mounted solar water heating and a ground source heat pump.
