Water Heaters - £5 thermostat could have prevented babys death11/01/2008 Rhianna Hardie, the baby who died from burns, when a heating system exploded, could have been saved if the boiler had been fitted with a £5 thermostat, it has been claimed. Rhianna died this week after suffering 95 per cent burns to her body when she was in her cot in her parents' council home in Taunton, Somerset. However, a plumbing expert who was cited in an investigation into the accident said a new thermostat could have prevented the horrific accident from occurring. In response, coroner Michael Rose who was presiding over the investigation, said that the UK's homeowners should act quickly to check the thermostat on their boilers for their own safety. He said: "If this incident gets the publicity that it appears to be receiving, virtually every householder in the UK should look at their thermostat and if it doesn't comply with current British standards, replace it as a matter of urgency."
