Back To Wall Toilets

Back to wall toilets are designed to conceal the cistern and all associated pipework behind a wall or within a WC unit, creating a cleaner, more streamlined look in your bathroom. Because there's no exposed cistern, they're a popular choice for modern and contemporary bathrooms - though traditional styles are available too, making them a versatile option for any home. Our range includes over 170 back to wall toilets from leading brands including Ideal Standard, RAK Ceramics, Nuie, Duravit, Villeroy & Boch, and more, with the majority supplied with a soft close seat.

FAQs About Back To Wall Toilets

A back to wall toilet is a pan that sits flush against the wall, with the cistern concealed either within a purpose-built WC unit or built into a stud wall. This creates a neater, more minimal appearance compared to a close coupled toilet, where the cistern sits visibly on top of the pan.

The key difference is whether the pan sits on the floor. A back to wall toilet is floor-mounted, so it rests on the ground in the normal way - only the cistern is hidden. A wall hung toilet has the pan suspended off the floor entirely, which is better for cleaning underneath but typically requires a more involved installation with a concealed frame or carrier system.

Not necessarily. You have two options: a pre-built back to wall WC unit (a fitted furniture unit that houses the cistern), or a built-in stud wall where a concealed cistern frame is installed. WC units are the simpler option if you're not doing a full bathroom build-out. We stock matching back to wall WC units for many of the pans in our range.

Most back to wall toilet pans are sold as the pan only, without a cistern - because the cistern is concealed and will typically be part of a separate WC unit or concealed frame. Some products in our range include a complete package with the pan, cistern, and seat, so check the individual product listing for what's included.

Projection is the measurement from the wall to the front of the pan. In our range, projections typically run from around 450mm to 560mm for standard models. If space is tight, look for products flagged as short projection -- many of these come in at 480mm to 500mm and can make a practical difference in a compact bathroom or cloakroom.

Yes. While most back to wall toilets are designed with a contemporary aesthetic, there are traditional and classically styled options available in our range. If you're fitting out a period property or prefer a less minimal look, filter by "Traditional" style to find suitable options.

A rimless toilet has no inner rim around the bowl. Traditional rimmed toilets have a ledge beneath the rim where bacteria and limescale can build up and be difficult to clean. Rimless designs direct the flush across the entire bowl surface, making them more hygienic and significantly easier to keep clean. The majority of back to wall toilets in our range feature a rimless design.

Yes - installation should be carried out by a qualified plumber or bathroom installer. Connecting to the soil stack, sealing the pan correctly, and accessing the concealed cistern all require professional expertise. If you're having a new stud wall built to house the cistern, you'll likely need a plumber and possibly a builder working together.
