What to Consider When Choosing a Wall Hung Toilet
Projection - This is the distance the pan extends from the wall, and it matters in smaller bathrooms. Most standard wall hung pans project between 500mm and 540mm. If space is tight, look for short projection models, which typically measure around 480mm or less - we stock a strong selection at this end of the range.
Pan height - One of the real advantages of wall hung installation is that the mounting height is adjustable during fitting. Standard toilet seat height is typically around 400-430mm from finished floor level, but the frame allows you to set it higher or lower to suit the user. Comfort height models sit slightly higher and can be helpful for taller users or those with mobility considerations.
Rim-free design - The majority of wall hung toilets in our range feature a rimless bowl. Without the hidden rim channel found on traditional pans, there are no hard-to-reach areas for bacteria and limescale to accumulate - making them noticeably easier to keep clean. Browse our full range of rimless toilets across all styles and types.
Concealed frame and flush plate - The pan alone is not enough for a new installation. You'll also need a concealed cistern frame (typically 820mm or 1120mm in height, depending on wall depth and desired pan height) and a flush plate. Some products in our range are listed as complete bundles including frame and flush plate; others are pan-only. Check the product title and specification carefully before purchasing.
Pan shape - Wall hung toilets are available in curved, D-shape, and square profiles. Curved pans have a softer, more traditional silhouette; square-edged pans suit contemporary and minimalist interiors.
Brands and quality - At the premium end, Geberit, Villeroy & Boch, and Duravit offer engineering and glaze quality that commands a higher price but rewards in longevity. Mid-range options from RAK Ceramics, VitrA, Ideal Standard, and Nuie represent strong value for most domestic projects.
FAQs About Wall Hung Toilets
A wall hung toilet - also referred to as a wall mounted toilet is a WC where the pan is fixed directly to the wall rather than sitting on the floor. The cistern is concealed inside the wall or within a furniture unit, with only the pan, seat, and flush plate visible. The result is a floating appearance with no floor-to-pan contact, making the floor beneath easier to clean.
Yes, the toilet bowl (pan) is just one part of the setup. To complete your installation, you will also need:
- A concealed cistern frame (the in-wall metal frame and water tank unit)
- A flush plate (the wall-mounted buttons)
To make things easier, many of our toilets are available as complete, all-in-one bundles. If a product is sold as the pan only, we will always clearly state that in the product title and description.
Wall hung toilets must be fixed to a structural wall or a dedicated steel frame that transfers load into the floor. A standard stud partition wall is not sufficient on its own. Most installations use a proprietary concealed cistern frame - such as those from Geberit or RAK - which is bolted to the floor and wall to provide the necessary support. A qualified plumber or bathroom installer will be able to advise on suitability for your specific wall type.
The standard installation height places the top of the toilet seat at 400mm to 430mm above the finished floor.
One of the biggest benefits of a wall-hung toilet is its flexibility. Because the concealed steel frame features adjustable legs, the height can be altered during the first-fix installation stage - typically anywhere between 380mm and 480mm.
- Standard Comfort: 400mm - 430mm (Ideal for most households)
- Higher / Accessible: 450mm - 480mm (Ideal for taller users or those with limited mobility)
They can be a good choice for compact spaces, particularly short projection models which extend around 480mm or less from the wall. However, the concealed cistern frame requires a false wall or furniture unit, which adds depth. In very small rooms, it is worth factoring in the total depth of the installation - frame, false wall, and pan combined before committing to a wall hung design.
A rimless toilet features an open bowl design with no hidden channel or overhanging ledge around the inside rim.
On a traditional toilet, water flows through a concealed rim - a dark, damp area that is difficult to clean and can harbour bacteria, limescale, and mould. Rimless designs eliminate this entirely.
Why choose a rimless design?
- Superior Hygiene: With no ledge for germs to hide behind, a quick wipe down cleans the entire surface.
- More Efficient Flush: Instead of just dropping downwards, water is propelled in a powerful, swirling motion to sweep the entire bowl clean using less water.
- Modern Look: The open-bowl design gives the inside of the toilet a much sleeker, cleaner aesthetic.
The vast majority of wall-hung models in our range now feature a rimless bowl as standard.
Both styles conceal the cistern, but they differ in construction. A back-to-wall toilet sits on the floor with the rear of the pan flush against a false wall or furniture unit that hides the cistern. A wall hung toilet is mounted to the wall so the pan has no floor contact at all. Wall hung models offer a more minimal appearance and easier floor cleaning, but require a structural fixing point and a suitable concealed frame.
