Doc M Pack Guide

Doc M Pack Types - Quick Guide

From close coupled and low level toilet packs to wall hung and accessible shower options, here's a quick overview of the main types we stock - and how each configuration differs.

Close Coupled Doc M Packs

With a close coupled pack, the cistern attaches directly to the toilet pan, creating a familiar WC arrangement. These packs commonly include a raised-height pan, basin, tap and support rails. Some are handed while others suit either transfer direction, so check the specification and exact contents before ordering.

Low Level Doc M Packs

In a low level pack, the cistern is mounted separately above the toilet pan and connected by a visible flush pipe. It offers an alternative to a close coupled arrangement and may use a back-to-wall pan. Check the supplied cistern, flush control, backrest and other included fittings.

Back to Wall Doc M Packs

A back to wall pan sits against the finished wall or service duct, with the cistern and flush pipe concealed behind it. This leaves fewer exposed surfaces around the WC, but the installation must still provide suitable cistern access and meet the specified pan position and clearances.

Wall Hung Doc M Packs

A wall hung pan is fixed to a supporting frame and does not touch the floor. The frame and cistern are concealed within a wall or service duct, and the pan must be installed at the specified height. Check that the frame and supporting structure are suitable for the installation.

Ambulant Doc M Packs

Ambulant packs are intended for WC cubicles used by people who can walk but need support because of restricted mobility. They typically combine a raised-height WC with grab rails and accessible controls. They do not replace a wheelchair-accessible unisex toilet where one is required.

Doc M Shower Packs

Doc M shower packs group together items such as a tip-up seat, thermostatic shower controls, grab rails, support rails, shower heads and curtain rails. Contents vary, and the room must still be designed around the required transfer layout, clear space and emergency assistance provision.

FAQs About Doc M Packs

A Doc M pack groups together sanitaryware and support fittings designed for an accessible toilet or shower room. Buying the items as a pack helps ensure they are compatible, but the complete room must still be designed and installed according to the current guidance applying to the project.

Contents vary, but a typical toilet pack may include a raised-height WC, cistern, ring seat, wall-hung basin, sequential mixer tap, fixed grab rails, hinged support rail and backrest. Some packs also include a TMV3 valve, alarm or dispensers, while others require these items to be purchased separately.

Not in every building or situation. Approved Document M provides guidance on meeting Part M of the Building Regulations for relevant building work in England. The Equality Act 2010 separately requires reasonable adjustments where disabled people would otherwise be substantially disadvantaged. The facilities required depend on the building, proposed work and location.

For a wheelchair-accessible unisex toilet, Approved Document M shows the top of the WC seat at 480mm above the finished floor. Check both the pan height and seat thickness when comparing products, as these combine to determine the final seated height.

No. The products are only one part of an accessible washroom. Room dimensions, transfer space, door position, rail locations, colour contrast, controls and installation must also meet the relevant requirements. Always compare the pack contents and proposed layout with the current project specification.

This depends on which side of the WC provides the clear space for wheelchair transfer. Some packs are designed for a particular transfer direction, while others are universal and can be installed in either layout. Check the room plan, rail positions and location of the flush control before ordering.
