Showers - The 80 Year Old Power Shower...

When it comes to bathroom showers, few today would have thought today that a form of power showers existed some 80 years ago. According to a BBC report, however, power showers may be older than many of us think.
Power showers are part and parcel of today’s contemporary bathrooms but, according to the report on the BBC, power showers may also have been in rudimentary existence some 80 years ago after an antique power shower went into under the auctioneer’s hammer last year. In an era where most toilets were still situated in outhouses, it may seem unfeasible that power showers would have existed but experts were surprised by the find that would have been most advanced showers of their day.

Showers - An Innovative Era

In a time where bathrooms were far less integral and considerably more simplistic than there modern day counterparts, the discovery that a form of power showers existed over 80 years ago is certainly a surprising one. According to the report on the BBC, the antique example of power showers was entered into auction after being discovered in a country house in mid-Wales. The cast-iron canopy bath which would have originally been covered with glass, would have been capable of delivering 5 powerful jets of water; hence the inference that it is one of the first power showers of that bygone era. The auctioneer behind the sale, Simon Kirby, states to the BBC, Even in the 1920s, the majority of people had outside loos and no running water, so this ‘power shower’ would have been quite a flash."

Showers - A Lost Treasure

Unfortunately, a large number of these pioneering power showers were destroyed or thrown away in the intermittent years between the 1930’s and today. According to the report on the BBC, to have showers such as the one found in the auction recently would certainly have been a status symbol and auctioneer, Simon Kirby, added, It's one of those things that is an example of what you could have at time, if you could afford it. It was a status symbol to own such luxurious showers."

Showers and Dinner - The Russian Way...

A news report by the Reuters news agency suggests that Russians who attend dinner parties are hoping the invite includes showers for the dinner guests too.
Reuters has reported on a new trend in Moscow dinner parties where the guests have showers after their soup. The bizarre trend is based on practical considerations after Moscow authorities switched off the hot water for annual repairs this summer. It means the Moscow population is forced to take cold showers during the repairs which are an annual event. The hot water cut-off impacts on most of the city but some parts of the city receive hot water sooner than others the result being these residents suddenly become very popular with their neighbours still struggling with cold showers. Being asked over for a dinner party or coffee, brings the hope that they can use their hot showers too.

Cold Showers Cause Havoc

The annual event has led to Moscow residents finding innovative ways to cope without their hot showers, boiling saucepans of water to heat up cold baths. The cold showers show that although the country is facing an economic resurgence with new wealth and skyscrapers, the old Soviet infrastructure is not keeping up with the increased demands of fast-moving modernity. Cold showers may be a welcome relief to some after a muggy summer's day, but for others cold showers can be dangerous as well as just uncomfortable. Reuters reports that the death of a famous Russian actor, Anatoly Papanov, has been blamed on the cold showers he had a heart attack while taking a cold shower due to the lack of hot water. One of the unpleasant side effects of cold showers is more people are reluctant to wash making the metro system an unbearable place to be in the summer months not just because of people's body odours but because of the excessive use of deodorants and perfumes to hide the smell.

The lack of hot showers impacts on other businesses such as gyms in the capital that experience an 80% drop in users during the hot water cut-off as people are simply unwilling to suffer cold showers.
